Penyet Talk

4:35:00 am

Saturday is (since this year, he just started working at Seria) is date day with him. So we went out to have lunch at this new restaurant at Times Square Brunei called 'Waroeng Penyet.' I am a sucker for penyet so of course I just could not simply pass this place!

In case you're wondering 'Ayam Penyet' (roughly translated as 'flat chicken') is an Indonesian cuisine which basically consist of mashed fried chicken (heard that in between frying the chicken is mashed though I'm not that quite sure so just goggle it aight? Haha..), spicy sauce-ish paste (in Malay: Sambal), fried tofu, fried tempeh (it's made of beans as well though I'm not sure what it really is), fresh veggies (usually shreds of cabbage, carrots and sometimes cucumber) and you eat it with rice. And I JUST LOVE THEM!

Verdict: 7/10.

The place looks nice with its modern, so called contemporary decor (black and white colour combo) and we were taken to our seats right away. I looked through the menu and well I have to say the food there are reasonably priced (the ayam penyet priced at $5.50 and other food under $8) but my only concern is that the drinks are overpriced? I mean I can't really remember the exact prices but our ice lemon tea priced at $2 while one of my favourite place (Hotpoint Restaurant) only priced it at $1.20. I kinda have this rule that the only overpriced drinks I can and will want to buy (if possible) are from franchised cafes (like Starbucks..Coffeebean..Those likes?) so yeah, the drinks are a turn-off.

So M ordered the Ayam Penyet and I ordered *gasp* Soto Ayam Jawa (Javanese Chicken Noodle Soup)! Haha..I know, I know..I wanted to go there for the rice but then I go off and ordered the noodles instead. Well, I thought since he's ordering rice why not I order a different one and that way we can taste different food from the restaurant! It's a win win yes?! Hehe. So we chatted and catch up with each others' days while waiting for our orders and somehow we waited quite a long time for our orders. Turns out the kitchen skipped ours *grumbles* so we had to wait a while longer. But! All was well cause we were given keropok (crackers) to nibble on for free! Hehe..

So as for the taste..I love the penyet! The sambal is so so spicy! And I love spicy! The chicken was okay, no complaints and I love it that it's not that salty (most important!). The sambal made me remember the penyet I had at 1Borneo, Kota Kinabalu so if you're a fan of that penyet then I'm sure you'll love this one! Muiz wasn't a fan of 'too spicy' so he didn't touch them after he tasted it. Hahah. But he did finish the whole thing so that means..Nyaman! I just wish they gave soups as extras like other penyet restaurants do!

For the noodles, it is for one thing not spicy at all. I mean it's delicious of course and I like it..but I don't love it 'that' much. Why? Because it's not spicy at all! I added the penyet sambal to it though and that gave it a kick alright! That of course is my preference but for ones who cannot tolerate spicy, it's good!

The free keropok! Hehe.
I LOVE THE ICE LEMON TEA! I LALALOVE IT! Seriously if you love Hotpoint's lemon tea then you'll love theirs! Even when the ice melted the drink still tastes the same and getting that right deserves a point! Banartah!

So overall, it's okay. I love the fact that both food is delicious and not a let down, I love the fact that the place just invites you to go in, the ice lemon tea are divine and the service is quite fast if you'd don't really think about the mistake they did with our orders. I have to warn you guys that service charge is included so don't just calculate your orders alright?

Post others soon! Peace!
